The West Highland Railway Line dates back to 23rd October 1889 when the first sod was cut near the Ben Nevis Distillery. The formal opening of the line took place on the 11th August 1894, the first steam train left Glasgow at 8:15 am and arrived in Fort William some 5 1/2 hours later!
The age of steam has all but passed, however, The Royal Scotsman luxury train still operates excursions on the West Highland line in the summer months.
The 'Western' journey, three nights, takes it from Edinburgh to Spean Bridge, where it stables overnight. The following days guests are taken to Mallaig, then back down the line to stable overnight at Bridge of Orchy. The third day sees the train travel south to Wemyss Bay where guets are taken by ferry to visit the Isle of Bute, before running to Stirling and returning to Edinburgh.
